Wilshire Center District Team’s Activities
Last quarter, the WC District Safety team assisted the City in getting over 260 bulky items picked up, made 9 calls/reports to the City for street repairs, assisted in getting 408 graffiti tags cleaned up; 31 potholes were reported. The team responded to 139 calls for assists to the LAPD and others. They issued 6 illegal vendor warnings and assisted 49 homeless individuals; 412 illegal signs were removed. The team addressed the subject of 7 individuals drinking in public and 14 belligerent transients. The team captain attended 7 LAPD crime control meetings and attended the Wilshire Center Business Watch meetings. The Business Watch meetings consist of our security team members, LAPD offices, and business representatives.
Last quarter, the WC District Clean Team collected 2,170 bags of trash (49,910 lbs), dispensed approximately 4,000 doggie bags, picked up 70 bulk items, and removed 234 graffiti tags on sidewalk pots, poles, and news racks. The WC District Clean Team is out every Monday and Thursday sweeping the sidewalks, picking up trash, clearing gutters and painting out graffiti from street poles and flower planters. The team empties 59 trash cans throughout the District due to the City’s reduced efforts which had led to an overflowing of the cans.
The landscape crew for the District’s Wilshire streetscape continues to maintain all 15 medians and about 160 flower pots along Wilshire Blvd. The work consists of removal of trash, trimming of plants, watering of plants, and repairing broken sprinklers. The crew replaced 66 sprinklers and 40 nozzles within the medians.
The WCBID trimmed 120 overgrown trees throughout the district last quarter. These over grown trees were blocking streetlights, damaging sidewalks, and obstructing the view of some businesses and buildings.
WCBID pressure washed several locations that had a large concentration of dirty sidewalks and stains. We have identified several other locations that we will be pressure washing in the future.

The next meeting of the Wilshire Center Business Watch will take place on Thursday, September 12, 2013, 12:00 noon at the Archdiocesan Catholic Center, 3424 Wilshire Blvd., El Camino Real Conference Room (5th floor). Complimentary light lunch will be provided by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As reported at the last meeting: while thefts of personal items from cars have been prevalent in the past, a new related crime is thefts of catalytic converters from cars. Models especially targeted are: Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Quest. Many of these are stolen even in the middle of the day; and it creates a vicious cycle, with some victims wanting replacements, and vendors getting those replacement parts by additional thefts. Purse-snatching remains a problem. There continue to be a number of snatch-and-grab robberies, with people running by and grabbing electronics, mostly smartphones, iPods, and laptop computers. The L.A.P.D. has a flyer alerting the neighborhood of this issue. “Lock It, Hide It, Keep It” reminds people not to leave their items unattended, whether on a restaurant table or in a car. Many cars are broken into when there are items in view. Cell phone providers are considering deactivating lost or stolen phones. This could decrease the attractiveness of this crime.
